Onyeme Calls On Electoral Bodies To Make Polling Units Closer To People
The Deputy Governor of Delta State, Sir Monday Onyeme, has called on electoral bodies in the country to, as a matter of necessity, make polling units closer to the people.
Onyeme made the cal on Thursday when members of Okotomi Phase 111 Landlords Association, Okpanam, Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State, paid him a courtesy visit at his office. Government House, Asaba.
Responding to the request of the landlords for polling units to be provided in their area, the deputy governor said that it was important for polling units to be closer to the people so that distance will not serve as a barrier to the electorate.
“The issue of people going to distance places on elections days to cast their votes due to location of polling units have become a very big challenge that electoral bodies must tackle with speed.
“You cannot just explain how somebody that is very far away will be going to Uzoigwe Primary School, moving to a different local government area to cast his vote on election day; it is not acceptable and the electoral bodies should do something about it,” Onyeme said.
The Deputy Governor, also, assured residents of Okotomi Phase 111 that the Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori-led administration would build on the legacies of its predecessors, assuring that on-going projects would be completed while new ones will also, be executed by the administration.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Association, Mr John Ogbeide, said that the visit was to felicitate and congratulate the deputy governor for his victory at the polls and successful inauguration.
Ogbeide said that they were happy that the election ended in favour of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and wished Sir Onyeme well as the Deputy Governor of Delta State, assuring him of their support at all times
